Coronado: The Island Life
Although not a true island, Coronado is a unique island community with a small-town feel: the highest speed limit on the island is 30 MPH; the community frequently hosts events like surf competitions and fund-raising spaghetti dinners; and everyone, it seems, comes out for holiday parades, high school football games, and summer concerts in Spreckels Park. Coronadoans-all 26,000 of them-live as islanders.
Island Huts:
In general, large stylish houses along the bay or the Pacific fringe the island, while more modest houses and apartments are further inland. To the north, homes give way to Naval Air Station North Island, or NASNI, which covers the northern part of the island and is closed to the public. At the island's south end is the town's most famous structure, the Hotel del Coronado, a National Historic Landmark; however, many other places-the shops along Orange Avenue, the many parks, and the Ferry Landing Marketplace, among others-also merit a gander.
Traveling Like an Islander:
Because of the island's safety and small size-7.4 square miles-many residents walk or bike to get around town. Middle and high school students roam the island on bikes and skateboards, and some residents travel in golf-cart style cars. Although the Bay Bridge, built in 1969, gives quick access to I-5 and downtown San Diego, some visitors and commuters choose the ferry that travels hourly between the Coronado Ferry Landing-of course-and Seaport Village in San Diego. Via the Silver Strand, Highway 75 connects Coronado to Imperial Beach and the mainland-and it also provides a peak at the Naval Amphibious Base, where Navy SEALs train.
The Beach, Island Style:
With water well-patrolled by lifeguards and an enforced ban on alcohol, Coronado maintains the most family-friendly beach in America, according to the Travel Channel. Along with the family-oriented atmosphere, the north end of the beach has a leash-free dog area and dunes spelling "Coronado Beach," a touch showing the care given to the beaches. The Hotel del Coronado dominates South Beach, where visitors and residents can learn to surf in the beginner-friendly waves, and where one can walk a few blocks to the restaurants and shops on Orange Avenue. Although the Naval Amphibious Base restricts public access further south, the sand continues down Silver Strand, making the "island" a peninsula. Of course, residents still call themselves "islanders"-"peninsulader" just doesn't have a ring to it.
Islander Eating:
Most of the city's restaurants huddle around the ferry landing or along the south end of Orange Avenue. Coronado Brewing Company, Bistro d'Asia, Nado Gelato, Miguel's, Café 1134, MooTime Creamery, The Brigantine-islanders love these and the many other exceptional eateries. Of course, Coronado has the normal franchises-including "KeTaco Hut," as some residents call it, a KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut in one restaurant-but in an island quirk, you won't find any drive-thrus here.
