North Park is located north of Balboa Park (hence the name) and bounded on the north by El Cajon Boulevard. North Park is an older community of San Diego but has been undergoing reconstruction since 1993 and more recently has been revived into an artistic community. After many years of disinvestment, North Park has become a premier location for homebuyers and businesses alike. This is due to a number of factors, including North Park's central location and proximity to downtown and overall market conditions. As a result, North Park has recently experienced a significant advent of development interest, especially within its downtown area.

The downtown area, which is marked by a large, retro "North Park" sign in the middle of University Avenue near 30th Street. This street attracts an artistic crowd with places like the Divisionary Theatre and coffee houses such as Crème. On the second Saturday of each month, an open gallery walk event on Ray Street, off of University Avenue. The business district is made up primarily of small shops, mom-and-pop businesses and unique to the area restaurants.

North Park has a retro 1930s style that gives it a lot character. University Avenue is attracting new businesses and becoming a pedestrian friendly shopping area it once was. Craftsman mid-twentieth century houses and dense apartments make up a large portion of the area. North Park is by far one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods of San Diego.
