With head shops such as The Black, natural food stores like People’s Co-Op and VW Vans lining the streets, OB is a nostalgic escape to the days of flower children and free love.

An eclectic community of surfers, hippies, punks and non-traditional families make Ocean Beach the unique beach town it is. Better known as “OB,” Ocean Beach is located on the Pacific Ocean, south of Mission Beach at the western terminus of Interstate 8. Although Sea World is within clear view, many tourists do not know of it’s existence making it the “locals” beach of San Diego. The main street of business is Newport Avenue, with the eastern blocks dominated by a large number of antique stores and is known as Antique Row.

Ocean Beach is home to longest concrete pier in the country. The 1,971 foor, T-shaped walkway that is a popular fishing spot. A restaurant on the pier called Ocean Beach Pier Cafe offers indoor and outdoor seating with ocean and harbor views. Residentially, Ocean Beach has quaint streets with houses , apartments and duplexes. Many community members discourage big real estate renovation to protect the character of the city and preserve an affordable place to call their own.

Ocean Beach is characterized by a strong sense of community. It thrives on locally-owned businesses and the 2001 opening of Starbucks caused quite a stir. Still, the chain shop sits among mom and pop coffee shops, burger joints and clothing stores. Every Wednesday, OB holds a Farmer’s Market with vendors selling international food, organic produce, handmade jewelry and more. Other events that bring the residents together include the O.B. Chili Cook Off, the Christmas Parade, and the 4th of July fireworks show. On the beach, beating the drums and beading necklaces is just as common as walking the dog. On the opposite end is Dog Beach, where owners can take their four-legged friends to fetch Frisbees and splash in the water.
